NEST:

In 1986, three congregations in Winnipeg’s North End joined forces to sponsor an Eritrean mother and daughter. Since then, the North End Sponsorship Team (NEST) has welcomed 181 persons to Winnipeg from 18 countries including Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Burundi, Columbia, Democratic Republic of Congo, El Salvador, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo and Vietnam. As well, NEST has provided care giving and assistance to additional refugees and groups who have asked or been referred to NEST for help.

NEST is now a cooperative ministry of one United Church congregation (Kildonan United) and four Lutheran congregations (Abundant Life, Grace, St. John’s & St. Luke’s Zion), plus individual members who work together in harmony to sponsor and welcome refugees into our midst. NEST also interacts with several other congregations and organizations in sponsoring refugees. NEST is a registered charity for income tax purposes.

Sponsorship Update:

Martha MUKENDI, her husband Kazadi MBUYI, sons Jacques (13), Justin (12) & twins Joseph & Josephine (5) and Martha’s siblings Rebecca (26), Bill (24) and Marie (21) arrived in Winnipeg on September 20, 2017 originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 1997, Martha’s parents and their children fled their country for Zambia. After her parents were killed, Martha cared for her three younger siblings and her two young sons. NEST submitted this application to Canada Immigration (CIC) in June 2008. Since then, Martha has married Kazadi and their twins have been born. The family was interviewed in 2016. Changes to which Canada Immigration visa office was responsible for this file delayed progress. NEST will provide all financial support and care giving for this family.

There are three Full Sponsorships awaiting processing by the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Approval for entry into Canada can take several years, and may be denied. Under a full sponsorship NEST provides care giving, household goods and all financial support for one year after each family arrives. NEST hopes for the safe and early arrival in Winnipeg of all these people:

-Rose ASAN EJIRA and her eight children and two grandchildren originally from Sudan and currently living in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya.

-Betty AKUMU EJIRA & husband Jean LOMAMI AMIST and four children. Originally from Sudan and now in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. Betty is the younger sister of Rose EJIRA.

-Chancé KAJINAKE, husband Jean LOMAMI AMISI and their daughter Michaella, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and now living in Bujumbura, Burundi. Chancé is the daughter of Kahindisa KOBWA who arrived in Winnipeg in 2013 with her family.

NEST has submitted applications to the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for three ‘nominal’, or ‘family-linked’, sponsorships. Under such a sponsorship, relatives or others in Winnipeg have agreed to provide all financial support, care giving and household goods for the sponsored persons after their arrival in Winnipeg.

-Abdelraheem KHATAB, his wife Ghroub and their daughter (2 1/2 years) originally from Aleppo, Syria and now in Jordan.

-Nuur HASSAN DIGALE a young man originally from Somalia, now living in a refugee camp in Ethiopia.

-Sibhatu ANDOM GEBREMESKEL is a young man originally from Eritrea, now living in Sudan.

NEST sponsorships are normally arranged through Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR), our Sponsorship Agreeement Holder with the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). NEST also works in cooperation with Welcome Place and other groups involved in bringing refugees to Canada.

The world continues to produce refugees in need of our help. NEST is limited in the number of sponsorships it can take by the finances and by the number of volunteers available for care giving. If you feel you can help, or you would like more information, please call NEST Chair ‘Jim Mair’ at 204-632-4757.

The North End Sponsorship Team (NEST) very much appreciates the kind and generous support given to it in so many ways by the congregation of Kildonan United Church, and by many others.

***The Winnipeg Free Press on September 22, 2017 printed a story on the “Long, Slow path to Canada’.

Please see bulletin board for the full story and pictures. This story was printed two days after Martha MUKENDI arrived in Winnipeg.

LUM:  The Lutheran Urban Ministry (the Urban) is a community of many marginalized and vulnerable in the West End of Winnipeg, many who live in extreme poverty. The Urban strives to feed the body and the spirit of those who attend. Strength and brokenness, faith and despair, resilience and hopelessness are within many of the stories shared. It is an incredible group of staff and volunteers and Urban community members who come through the door - sharing a lot of laughter, life stories, some tears at times and hope.

Thank you to the meal teams who ensure that no one leaves the Urban hungry.  Our website calendar shows available dates for meal teams: http://www.theurban.ca/calendar.php  Please contact me: rhonda@theurban.ca for additional information or to add your meal team to the calendar.

Thank you to the congregations who donate food items to fill our pantry with emergency food for our Urban community members who at times experience extra hardships.

Thank you to Jac and Ben from Steinbach who bring bread and pastries from the Steinbach Helping Hands Food Bank and to those who bake cookies and loaves for coffee.

Thank you to all of the individuals who support the Urban to keep us operating, and to the MNO Synod who supports us with 20% of our operating expenses.
