Garden Plot for The Urban.

Despite concerns that we would not get supplies for the garden, thanks to Rhonda Gorham we got all our needs supplied from Schiemers Greenhouses on Highway 59.

The plot was planted with the help of Maria Harden on Wednesday, and was watered soon afterwards by God.  Now we await to see the fruits of our labours.

Praise be to God.

NEST:

Jim Mair is our representative on the Canadian Council for Refugees (Western Division) and he attended their monthly meetings at ‘Welcome Place’. Their current concern is the settlement of the Syrians in Winnipeg. About 700 Syrian families have arrived with Blended Visa Office Refugees and Government Sponsored Refugees making up this number. They were informed that the new Canadian host has extended the original time set, to cover the cost of their passage. The council are hoping the Government will see fit to pay the fare for all refugees (including our privately sponsored persons or families) rather than having them face a large bill when they arrive and are in need!

The Council has been informed the Kenyan Governments are seeking to close the Camp and Visa Office in Kenya. There is hope this may result in a ‘speed up’ of the large backlog – where some refugees have ‘been in here with applications approved for 8, 9 or even 10 years. This could mean that the 2 families NEST is sponsoring and originally from the Sudan could arrive this year!

We welcomed PASQUAL OKUN at our May meeting. He is related to the above families and has kept in touch with them – also keeping NEST informed. PASQUAL is himself a refugee from the Sudan and had been in a camp for 4 years, arriving in Canada in June, 2009. A very personable man, works and is quite fluent in English. He and his wife Jane have sent money to help the 2 families and have had their friends collecting furniture and furnishings, etc. for the families when they arrive and will also help with the caregiving. There are 9 members (including very young children) in one family. Caregivers will be needed and welcomed! NEST does not have storage space (ahead of their arrival) but will inform regarding needed supplies when they do arrive. Will let you know!3

Pasqual is proud of his son, 24, who has studied and worked to become an auto mechanic and has been hired for a 2 year apprenticeship!

***NEST is looking for people who would consider being part of a team of caregivers for a refugee family.  If you would like to know more about this or might be interested, please speak to Pastor Lynne.

***Upcoming Events:

The next NEST General Meeting will be held on June 28th at 7:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church.

All are Welcome! Refreshments to follow meeting.

NEST Annual Picnic will be from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 13th, 2016 at Hyland Park, Henderson Hwy. North of the Perinmeter. Bring your own Lunch! All are Welcome. Watch for the Poster and more information!

Thank You for your prayers and support.

-Blessings!  Dorothy Handkamer

LUTHER VILLAGE NEWS:

20th Anniversary Women’s Retreat
Join us for this special weekend celebrating women. Our resource leaders for the weekend, are Bishop Elaine Sauer and Shirley Barrow and they are excited to share the 20th Anniversary with all of you.

The weekend theme is: ON THIS ROCK- Women of Faith gathered in Jesus Name.

The gathering times will include opportunities for growing in faith, sharing how God has been a ROCK in the midst of struggles, how God has made us a solid creation, able to bring beauty and power and strength to the world, even though we come with sharp edges and worn out smoothness. The time is spent in knowing God's silent presence in the midst of the beauty of creation, where new life is sustained on rocks covered in moss, grass and trees.

Join us and take care of yourself for this weekend: an opportunity to enjoy reflexology with our 2 guest clinicians, hike on one of our trails, nap, relax on the beach, nap, have meals prepared and cleaned up for you, canoe, kayak, pontoon boat ride, nap...you choose. A paint night is being planned for one evening after a campfire.

A great weekend. June 10 - 12. Cost $125.00 + hst. Register soon so you don’t miss out

WORSHIP IN THE PARK – AUGUST 7th, 2016

On Sunday, August 7th, we will join together with Abundant Life and Sherwood Park Lutheran Churches in order to bless and send our youth to CLAY 2016 in Charlottetown, PEI.  Instead of gathering at our own churches, we will worship together at 12:30 pm at Kildonan Park.  A map will be provided so you know where to go!  A barbecue will follow the worship service.

For this particular Sunday, help will be needed on a number of different fronts.  We need somebody with a truck to transport the BBQ from St. Luke’s Zion to the park.  We may need some “shuttle drivers” to pick people up at the parking lots in the park and bring them to our worship location.  We will need one or two people to look after the offering for SLZ.  And some people might be asked to bring food, as well.  If you are able and willing to help with any of these things, please let Pastor Lynne know!  Also, there will be some games for children, so don’t hesitate to bring all ages!

ARE YOU INTERESTED . . .

in making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land?

If so, please let Pastor Lynne know!
